Wouldn’t it be great if…?

This simple question is one of the most powerful tools in the universe. When you ask this of yourself, you tap into the sense of wonder and possibility that exists inside you, forgotten or suppressed. It lets you skip past the busy-ness of your life, and helps you connect with your inner beat and leads you to pursue what you WANT to do.

Dancing Through Life began when I decided that it would be great if I could understand my own life’s path. It led me to realize that if you want to lead a true and authentic life, you must open yourself up to the possibility of more. We can be more than we think we are, and we can do more than we think we’re capable of doing.

I tapped into the spirit of possibility and became an amateur ballroom dancing world champion in my 70s, so I am living proof that this isn’t just for the young. It’s for everyone!

I wrote Dancing Through Life to inspire you to start living the life you’ve always wanted to live, by learning how to:

  • Trust your intuition
  • Broaden your horizons and get out of your comfort zone
  • Understand the power of your own thoughts
  • Adopt a growth mind-set
  • Set and achieve goals

At the end of the day, if the music is playing you should be dancing. We only have one life, and we should live it with gusto.

Start seizing the possibilities in your life today!

About the Author

I was born on a farm in Michigan over 80 years ago, destined for a humble life working the small plot of land my family had tended for generations. Instead of walking the path that had been laid out before me, I asked myself “Wouldn’t it be great if…?” and chose to pursue adventure and possibility.

I left the farm to join the merchant marines and worked on a freighter hauling iron ore from Canada to Chicago. I served in the Army, where my older and wiser friends encouraged me to go back to school. So I went to the University of Michigan and began to see even broader possibilities. I moved to Vail, Colorado and became an entrepreneur when a friend encouraged me to open a commercial laundry that could serve his restaurant. (Never mind that I had no idea how to run a laundry!) Over time–step by step and opportunity by opportunity–I ended up owning a sizable real estate portfolio. All told, I turned the $12 I had when I left the farm into $30 million.

Each step along this path–and the countless ones in between–presented new challenges. But I always believed I could accomplish anything, no matter how impossible it seemed to anyone else. I never stopped learning and growing. And I will never be finished.

I don’t bring these things accomplishments up to brag or show off. I promise you that I was terrible at every one of these things when I started. I didn’t succeed because I am smarter or more talented than the next guy–I’m not! But I never let a lack of knowledge or skills keep him from figuring things out as I went. I enjoyed the process of learning and improving. And you can do anything you want if you do the same.

Passion Projects Through the Years

My curiosity and zest for life have served me well far beyond my professional life. I’ve become enamored of a long list of hobbies over the years, and have found a measure of success in every one.

I raced sailboats in my 40s. In my 50s, I picked up tennis and practiced until I could challenge my professional instructor. In my 60s I learned photography, and my photos were featured in a book of poetry. I picked up ballroom dancing in my 70s and practiced until I won the amateur world championships. My latest quest is to conquer classical piano, and I love my time in front of the keys.

Here’s my challenge to you: wake up every day excited about something! Use that passion and energy to take just one step further down that path. Or start down a new one. Just never believe the part of your brain–or the outside world–that says it’s not worth it. You are capable of more than you imagine.

Let your curiosity and passion lead you to a new adventure—I’m living proof that it’s never too late!
